CRITERIA FOR THE WINNING PHOTO
As this is a competition, there has to be a winner. You might like to know what our judges will be looking for in the first (!) and best Augmented Reality Wildlife Photographer of the Year.
First and foremost... LOL! Your photo should make us roar with laughter! We need some conservation optimism love.
Originality: We love to see interesting juxtapositions of animals in unexpected environments... Use the unique imagination our human species is blessed with!
Technique: AR wildlife photography is a new discipline, and we want to set the technical bar high from the first year. That means realistic placement of the AR animal, good sharpness of image, & proper lighting and composition. Get your nerd on.
Artistic qualities: Bring out your inner artist with unique cropping, poetic light or perhaps the use of some self designed paper props?
COMPETITION RULES & REGULATIONS
Who can submit?
Anyone over the age of 18 can submit photos to the competition. Photos submitted by those less than the age of 18 must have parents or guardians that are eligible. The competition is not open to employees, shareholders or board members of IoE or any of our partners - sorry, we know you have all been working really hard and would love to snap up that safari, but that would not be fair to others.
What type of photo can be submitted?
We can only accept photos taken through the Safari Central app. Small modifications are allowed, but not significant manipulation of the image. No Photoshop please! You can enter an unlimited number of photos, but please note we only award one prize per participant - so choose your entries wisely.
Disqualification
We love animals, we generally like people and we respect the law. Therefore, the following photos cannot be entered or will be disqualified:
Photos that violate or infringe upon someone else’s rights. Please don’t use someone else’s photo in your image, don’t portray someone who doesn’t want to be seen on the web.
We get that AR is fun to play around with, but photos that contain sexually explicit, nude, obscene, violent or other objectionable or inappropriate content are a no-no. This counts for both the augmented reality characters as well as other subjects within the photo, be it animal, mineral or vegetable.
You guessed it: an absolute no go is to submit images that involve the willful harassment of wildlife or damage to the environment. We’ve hired a shamanic mandrill to undo this bad karma and delete the image from the interwebs.
We’re low risk kind of people: we won’t allow images that involve putting any individual or animal in danger.
And unfortunately, if we cannot identify or contact the maker of the photo before the judging process starts, it is disqualified from competition.
Permissions granted
By submitting your photos through the app, you allow Internet of Elephants, Safari Central and our conservation partners to use your photos for our own promotional purposes. The photos entered through the app remain the property of the photographer. Photos entered through the app will automatically be displayed to the public on the Safari Central Facebook gallery - so make sure you are happy with the shot and you have permission from the person in the photo before submitting it. Photos entered through other means will be manually moved to the same gallery within 48 hours.
Judging
Judging for the grand prize is at the total discretion of our jury panel. They are super generous in donating their time and have spent decades honing their wildlife photo eye, so we owe them as much. Judging for the animal-specific prizes is at the total discretion of our conservation partners, people fighting the good fight for wildlife, and they are the best party to judge what you have created with their animal. The winner of the weekly challenges will be based on number of Likes gathered on our Safari Central Facebook page during the week of the challenge between Tuesday morning 9am CET and Sunday afternoon 5pm CET. Photos cannot win more than one weekly challenge.
Correspondence
Though we really love a good email chain about the merits of your photography, 4G issues and how your mom thinks your photo is the best, we regret that we won’t be able reply to correspondence about your individual submission.
Terms & Conditions
These Terms & Conditions apply to the Augmented Reality Wildlife Photographer of the Year photo contest (the “Photo Contest”) that is organized by Internet of Elephants ltd. and/or its affiliates (“Internet of Elephants ltd.”). The Photo Contest is open to all professional and amateur photographers who have reached the age of maturity in their jurisdiction of residence at the time of entry. Entrants that haven’t reached the age of maturity in their jurisdiction of residence require the approval of their legal guardian for participating in the Photo Contest. Internet of Elephants reserves the right to reject any entry if, at Internet of Elephants’ sole discretion, the laws of an applicable jurisdiction, including but not limited to the entrant’s jurisdiction of residence at the time of entry, would prohibit or limit Internet of Elephants from proceeding with the Contest as intended or the consideration or awarding of any Prize would impose additional administrative, tax, operational, or legal burdens on Internet of Elephants.
Furthermore, individuals residing in any “Excluded Jurisdiction” are ineligible to enter the Photo Contest. Excluded Jurisdiction means any country listed on the US Treasury Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) Active Sanctions Programs list available at https://sanctionssearch.ofac.treas.gov/.

If you choose to include people in your submission, you are responsible for obtaining the necessary releases from the individuals depicted, and must be able to provide copies of those releases to Internet of Elephants upon request.
The following submissions are ineligible:

Internet of Elephants reserves the right to require entrants to submit evidence of the subject’s legal consent to be photographed for the submitted photograph, which may include a signed waiver from the subject. NOTE: Waiver requirements vary by jurisdiction, and the entrant is responsible for obtaining a legally enforceable waiver from any photographed subject.

- Images that involve the willful harassment of wildlife, or damage to the environment by the photographer.
- Images that involve putting any individual or animal in danger.
Internet of Elephants shall determine entry eligibility in its sole and absolute discretion. All photos that violate the above rules will either not be accepted or removed from the Safari Central Contest Facebook Gallery (the “Gallery”) should they be submitted through the App.

PRIZES and JUDGING
There are three levels of prizes. A grand prize, an animal specific prize, and weekly challenge prizes.
Each will be judged differently, as follows:
- Grand prize: There will be one grand prize and it will be awarded to the best overall photograph as judged by a panel of objective jurors selected by Internet of Elephants at its sole discretion (the “Panel”). The grand prize winner will be announced on the 11th of October via social media and the winner will be contacted via the contact information provided at the time of entry.
- Best Animal Photo prize: 6 prizes will be rewarded for best photo of each animal within the App. These will be determined by the chosen staff of the conservation organization that sponsors that animal, specifically: Chicago Zoological Society for the Grizzly Bear, Conservation International for the Indri, Pro-Carnivores for the jaguar, Ol Pejeta Conservancy for the rhino, Space for Giants for the elephant, and Tswalu Foundation for the pangolin. Each organization will at its own discretion decide who within their organization will be part of the panels that choose the winners of their animal.
- Weekly challenge: Each week, Internet of Elephants will choose the best photographs that are connected to the weekly challenges, as visible on the Gallery. Internet of Elephants will create a facebook poll to help the public choose a winner. Photos may not be eligible as the winner of the Weekly Challenge more than once.
JUDGING FOR THE GRAND PRIZE
Photos will be judged on originality, composition, artistic merit and overall most creative use of augmented reality to create an engaging and sympathetic view towards wildlife. Judging will be conducted by the Panel, which will evaluate all valid entries and pick the winners.
